On Sunday, December 1, 2019, Iraq’s Parliament accepted Prime Minister Abdul Mahdi’s resignation. According to a statement released from Parliament’s media office, the Iraqi Parliament will ask President Barham Saleh to appoint a new Prime Minister.
The former Prime Minister and his government, however, will play the caretaker role until a new government is formed. In order for a new government to take over, the largest bloc in Parliament needs to approve a new candidate.
Legal expert Tareq Harb said: "Based on the constitution, this resignation includes the whole government - ministers and the deputy prime minister. The government has now become a caretaker government which will only address urgent issues until a new government is elected."
