On August 18, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko dismissed the country’s prime minister following a corruption scandal. Other key members, including several vice-premiers and ministers also lost their posts.

The former prime minister Andrei Kobyakov served as the head of government since 2014.

According to a statement on the presidential website, President Lukashenko appointed Sergei N. Roumas as the new prime minister.

Roumas, 48, is the former head of the country’s Development Bank. Prior to his appointment as the Chair of JSC Development Bank, Roumas served as Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus from 2010 to 2012.

Roumas started his career in the military after finishing his college education at the High Military Financial School, cum laude, in Yaroslavl, Russia in 1990.

He later graduated from the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of Belarus in international business and received his Ph.D. in Economics from Belarus State Economic University.

In the biggest government reshuffle since 2014, the key posts newly appointed by President Lukashenko include four deputy prime ministers and the ministers of economy, communications and industry.
